Frame
Original, by H. P. Sarchet, London. Frame currently separated from artwork

Frame

The elegant sweep of this profile provides a depth relative to the width, which is not common for frames of this type. The pronounced leading edge suggests a box-like construction. The form is, nevertheless, that of a frame more commonly associated with the framing of oil paintings, particularly with regard to the width of the slip and the close-fitting nature of the presentation. Though the watercolour and the frame are now separated they have been re-assembled digitally.

Materials

The frame uses small runs of composition ornament on a wooden chassis. The profile is mitred and nailed across the corners. The mitres are not hidden and rely on precise cutting and joining. The corners are re-enforced on the reverse with blocks. There is burnished water gilding on the taenia of the leading edge (on a black bole), oil gilding elsewhere. The slip is water gilded.

Frame Condition

Good original condition.
