Salvador Dalí: Liquid Desire – Opening Soon!

Incorporating more than 200 works, this extraordinary exhibition is the first comprehensive retrospective of the work of Salvador Dalí ever to be staged in Australia. The exhibition will trace the genius of Dalí from his earliest years as an exceptionally talented 14–year old, to the final majestic paintings created when the artist was in his seventies.

    A range of international and local speakers present a fascinating array of papers on this quintessential 20th century artistic genius. Keynote speaker: Elliott H King, art historian and Dalí specialist, Denver, Colorado, USA.

    The NGV comes alive with a variety of talks, live performances, music, and fine food and wine. The program offers music and performance inspired by the life and travels of Dalí, from vibrant Spanish rhythms to early jazz and the wild and flamboyant theatre of Parisian bohemia.
    Cost Entry to the NGV for art after dark is free. Admission fees apply for Salvador Dalí: Liquid Desire and Introductory Talks (6pm). Students receive $11 exhibition entry after 4pm. Last ticket sales at 7.30pm.

    • 6pm Salvador Dalí Introductory Talk Presented by Dr Ted Gott, exhibition curator and Senior Curator, International Art (fees apply).
    • 6.30pm Performance: Lillian Starr Lillian Starr explores the theme of surrealism in a glamorous burlesque show.

    Vibrant Latin Rhythms
    Wed 24 Jun and 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 Jul, 5–9pm
    • 5.30pm & 7pm Performance: Azucar With a line up including some of Australia’s finest Latin and jazz musicians, the infectious grooves, fiery solos and rich vocal harmonies from Azucar invoke Dalí's Spanish heritage. Join us for a swinging salsa lesson from 6.30pm and apply your new dance knowledge in the second set.

    • 6.30pm Salsa Dance Lesson With Fabio Robles & Ana Andre, Directors of Robles Dance Academy and choreographers, Dancing With the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance.

This winter, the Grollo-Equiset Garden at NGV International will be transformed by Master Tetsunori Kawana, internationally renowned practitioner of contemporary Japanese bamboo sculpture. The unique creation of vast physical proportion and lyrical power is unlike anything the garden has ever displayed before.

  • The Satirical Eye Lecture: Exaggeration, Satire and the Grotesque in Film

    Satire, caricature, the grotesque ... how possible is it in a photographic medium such as film? Great filmmakers including Stanley Kubrick, the Coen brothers and the photographer/director William Klein have devoted their lives to this project, gradually stylising every aspect of their craft in order to take cinema away from simple realism and into the realms of the truly satiric.
