This week at Friday Nights at Jean Paul Gaultier, Elizabeth Rose will take to the stage. Ahead of her performance, we asked her a few questions about art, fashion and music. Book tickets now.
Describe your sound in 5 words or less?
Moody, beats-based, alternative, direct and danceable.
If your music was an artwork what would it look like?
It would be dark in some areas and light in others, it would be colourful and lively…strong lines and graphics.
Who’s your favourite artist/artwork?
I like Jenny Kee’s pieces/prints a lot…I also love Florence Broadhurst.
What’s your favourite gig you have played to date?
My fave show was earlier this year at Oxford Art Factory. It was my headline show for my EP tour and it was sold out! Such an energetic crowd…it was a great show.
What inspires/influences your music the most?
My dreams and the people around me…everyday life. I think a whole lot, so I always have a lot to write about.
What song do you wish you wrote?
Somebody I Used to Know…doesn’t everyone wish that? 😉
What part of making music excites you the most?
Creating a new sound or interesting melody/overall feel that sounds good to me really excites me!
What can a punter expect from your live show?
Dancing…visuals…more dancing….fun costumes!
Tell us about the last song you wrote?
I’m finishing up work for my album at the moment, so I’ve written a whole heap of newbies! The most recent track I wrote was written in Bali on a writing trip I did back in July. It’s a track I did with M Phazes and I wrote it about the idea of missed opportunities – it’s basically me telling myself to stop second guessing and being indecisive…to just believe in myself.
What is the most unique/memorable item of clothing you own?
I own an awesome alligator two piece costume / dress hand made by Ashiya of House of Cards label from Brisbane. It’s so amazing…it’s a cropped little top with an alligator face sequined on and a cape at the back that acts as the tail!
What was your worst fashion crime?
Surely wearing scungies in school under my sports skirt….eugh.
What would your dream stage outfit be and who would design it?
I would love to be wearing a two piece outfit made completely out of lilac ostrich feathers…a little mini skirt and a cropped little shirt with high collar…and then have something kooky like miniature barbie shoes arranged in a pattern on it. I think someone like Romance Was Born could smash this out!
