James Gleeson is Australia’s most significant surrealist artist. For over fifty years he has concerned himself with the art and literature of European artists associated with the Dada and Surrealist movements. The darkening stage is typical of Gleeson’s fascination with decay and growth and an evolving landscape of the imagination, while the dissolving organic forms in the painting conjure up the darkest nightmares. The darkening stage is an outstanding example of Gleeson’s recent work.
