This small tazza is executed in a glass known as girasole. The opalescence of the glass is due to the presence of lead hydrogen arsenate crystals in the metal. Girasole is the Italian word for ‘sunflower’ but also refers to a type of opal gemstone whose iridescence this glass recalls. Girasole was particularly popular at the end of the seventeenth century and during the first two decades of the eighteenth century.
Questa piccola tazza è stata prodotta in un vetro noto con il nome di girasole. L’opalescenza del vetro è dovuta alla presenza di cristalli di idrogeno arseniato di piombo nel metallo. Oltre a riferirsi al classico fiore, la parola girasole si riferisce anche a un tipo di gemma opale di cui questo vetro ricorda l’iridescenza. Il girasole fu particolarmente popolare alla fine del XVII secolo e nei primi due decenni del XVIII secolo.
