Ballet & Fashion is a joint project between The Australian Ballet and the National Gallery of Victoria that showcases some of the most successful collaborations between fashion designers and dance companies over the past three decades. Designing for dance is a remarkably different process than creating for the runway. By embracing the tradition of the tutu or expanding a company’s repertoire with challenging styles, materials and forms, designers have reshaped the look of dance and ballet for the contemporary stage.

Opening in the week of The Australian Ballet’s 50th birthday, the exhibition features designs created by Australian and international fashion luminaries Akira Isogawa, Collette Dinnigan, Easton Pearson, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, Christian Lacroix, Vanessa Leyonhjelm, Toni Maticevski, Richard Nylon, Ralph Rucci, Valentino and Viktor&Rolf for The Australian Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Phillip Adams BalletLab, the English National Ballet, Merce Cunningham, Nederlands Dans Theater, Sydney Dance Company and the Vienna State Ballet.

Ballet & Fashion is a collaboration between the National Gallery of Victoria and The Australian Ballet, with support from Exhibition Sponsor, Vogue Australia.
