Follow the Flag: Australian Artists and War 1914–45 is the NGV’s contribution to the rich and diverse cultural offerings being presented to the Victorian public in 2015 to mark the centenary of the landing at Gallipoli Cove. In response to this important moment in Australian history, the Gallery presents a major exhibition showing the work of Australian artists who drew on their experiences of war between 1914 and 1945.
The exhibition comprises a diverse range of works; including paintings, works on paper, photographs, sculpture, and vernacular art. Through the work of some of Australia’s most well-known artists, such as, Arthur Streeton, Russell Drysdale, Albert Tucker, Joy Hester, Frank Hurley and Max Dupain as well as soldier artists and unknown makers, it reveals the experiences of Australians actively engaged in the armed forces and those at home. Importantly it reflects the diversity of attitudes and experiences of this turbulent time in Australia and around the world.
