Ground Level, Federation Court
The NGV presents a spectacular new installation by renowned Berlin-based, Danish contemporary artist Jeppe Hein. Constructed from evenly spaced upright forms made of highly reflective stainless steel, Semicircular space 2016, invites visitors to become immersed in a nautilus-like labyrinthine form. The installation’s mirrored surfaces promote a dynamic relationship between the viewer and the surrounding architecture, resulting in a disorienting maze-like space where the physical space and the mirrored space are experienced in an alternating rhythm. Jeppe Hein is well known for installations and sculptures that playfully investigate space and perception, drawing upon the traditions of Op art, Conceptual art and Minimalism. Hein has produced numerous public art commission and exhibited widely internationally including solo exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Germany (2015); 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2010); Art Tower Mito, Mito (2010); the Neues Museum, Nürnberg; Indianapolis Museum of Art (2010); ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum, Århus (2009); Sculpture Center, New York; and P.S.1 MOMA, New York (2004).
Semicircular space continues the NGV’s ongoing series of contemporary art commissions for Federation Court at NGV International, with previous works including Paola Pivi’s polystyrene polar bears, titled You started it … I finish it and Carsten Höller’s Golden mirror carousel.
The installation is presented as part of the NGV’s ongoing series of Federation Court commissions and made possible with generous support from the Loti & Victor Smorgon Fund.
