The National Gallery of Victoria is committed to providing creative experiences, especially for children, teenagers and families. Through participatory exhibitions, events and sensory experiences, the NGV connects children with art and culture from all over the world, enabling them to experience the diverse and creative ways artists approach their work and allowing children access to new worlds and ideas.

Making Art: Imagine Everything is Real is the centre of creativity for children and their families at the NGV this winter. Coinciding with the premiere exhibition, The Picasso Century, Making Art features a range of hands-on activities and multimedia experiences inspired by methods of working invented by some of the leading European artists included in the exhibition.

European artists Georges Braque, Remedios Varo, Pablo Picasso, and Natalia Goncharova lived and worked in Paris in the early twentieth century and are recognised for their innovative and experimental approaches to making art. While learning about some of the leading artists of the twentieth century in Europe, children can make their own surprising works when they explore collage techniques, write poetry and play surrealist games and turn everyday materials into large-scale sculptures.

Making Art: Imagine Everything is Real is generously supported by the Packer Family and Crown Resorts Foundations, the City of Melbourne, Spencer Ko and Taylor Fletchett.

ACTIVITIES

Make a Creature

Artist Remedios Varo and the Surrealists were interested in ideas about the mind, such as exploring dreams and unconscious thoughts. They played games together. One of their drawing games created strange images made up of different objects and parts of bodies. Play the game when you visit and make a creature!

Make a Collage

Artist Georges Braque is thought to be the first artist to make a paper collagé. Instead of using pencils, Braque cut and pasted pieces of patterned wallpaper on to his drawing. Experiment with colour and shape when you make a collage, then turn your work into a digital animation.

Make a Poem

Artist Natalia Goncharova was friends with many poets and writers. They often spent time together writing and drawing to make books of poems. At Make a Poem, you can draw a portrait of a special person or pet in your life and then write a poem about them.

Make a Sculpture

Artist Pablo Picasso learnt paper-cutting and folding when he was young and used these techniques throughout his life as an artist. Picasso could transform flat pieces of paper or card into three dimensional sculptures. In Make a Sculpture, take shapes and turn them into three-dimensional sculptures. Then sit back and watch your creation bathed in colourful lights.
