Physical description
This Uzbek woman’s coat (chapan) is made from loom width strips of silk ikat. Against a green ground, undyed shapes highlighted with red form the decorative motifs. Misaligned at the garment’s front, the designs include tamar triangular motifs that act as protective amulets, ram’s horns and sinuous boteh (paisley). The Russian printed cotton lining is patterned with tulips against a pink lace-like floral ground. The gathers at each side of the coat are embroidered with short bands of silk thread.
