About this work

The faun was an ancient Roman god of the wild being half-human and half-goat, the top half being human, but with goat’s horns on the head. It had particular associations with forests and the god Pan, and the rugged, rustic country of the south of France appealed greatly to Picasso’s fascination with antiquity. As Picasso became more familiar with the ceramic medium, he began to ask for more specific shapes to suit his designs and the round/square plate is a form unique to Picasso’s work from the pottery.
