Robert Rooney was a painter, photographer and key proponent of conceptual art in Australia. Born in suburban Melbourne in 1937, his practice was based on his observations of the seemingly insignificant aspects of everyday life. Rooney is known primarily for his abstract paintings and serial photographic works exploring mundane aspects and routine activities, which he documented with his distinctive sense of humour. This group of early prints was made in the mid-1950s when Rooney was studying at Swinburne College of Technology in Melbourne. At this time, he was making both figurative and abstract works, before focusing on hard-edge abstraction from the early 1960s onwards.
