About this work

Dhambit Mununggurr was born in 1968, the daughter of major Yolŋu artists Mutitjpuy Mununggurr and Gulumbu Yunupingu, both winners of the National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award. Dhambit’s grandfathers, Wonggu and Munggurrawuy were both legendary leaders and artists. In 2007, Dhambit was hit by a car and suffered serious head injuries, which threatened her life. Following her accident, Mununggurr was granted permission to use acrylic paint due to her restricted mobility and the ease with which acrylic paint could be manipulated. In 2019 Munuggurr produced the first known blue bark paintings.
