About this work

By the end of the fifteenth century the city of Nuremberg in Germany had become the principal centre for the production of copper and brass in Europe. Dishes such as this were generally used in domestic settings, and may have been intended as basins in which to wash one’s hands before a meal. Such dishes were exported in great quantity across Europe, including to England where they were often used for collecting donations from the congregation.
