About this work

Gary Hume is a British painter, sculptor and printmaker who came to prominence as a member of the Young British Artists in the early 1990s. He is known for his paintings in high-gloss industrial paints depicting portraits, everyday objects and floral subjects. Flowers have been a central motif in his art since 1993 and he has made several series of prints on the subject. The most recent series Flowers of Dover, made in 2022, exemplifies Hume’s highly reductive and simplified style, unusual colour combinations and exploration in his art of beauty and pleasure as well as empathy and melancholy.
