About this work

The form of this vase imitates an ancient Greek kalyx-krater, a deep bowl with a pedestal foot and tall loop handles that was used for mixing water and wine. The decoration and colour scheme reference Greek and south Italian red-figure vases, and the decoration on this vase was most likely taken directly from an ancient vase. Wedgwood has added the pierced domed cover to turn the vase into an elegant potpourri for a fashionable eighteenth-century interior.
