About this work

By the mid eighteenth century the taking of snuff, a recreational drug, had become a popular social ritual for many. Snuffboxes were elegant personal objects that carried a high degree of social currency, as well as being important social props. They were frequently carried by elegant women of fashion and often found among the objects adorning the toilette dressing table.
