The rich blue ground colour on this stand was known as bleu lapis, in reference to the semi-precious stone lapis lazuli. It was introduced in 1752 and was the first ground colour produced by the Vincennes manufactory. The mottled effect was deliberate and imitated Chinese bleu soufflé or ‘blown blue’ wares, achieved by blowing powdered cobalt pigment through a gauze onto the unglazed porcelain surface.
