About this work

The orange-red ground colour on this cup and saucer was probably imitating Asian red lacquerware, in particular Japanese Negoro (red and black) lacquer. Chinese and Japanese lacquered objects and furniture were luxury products that, like porcelain, were imported into Europe in large quantities during the eighteenth century.
