The base of this Chinese beaker has been subtly moulded with palm leaves. The blank beaker was then exported to the Netherlands, where it was decorated with motifs inspired by Japanese Kakiemon porcelain, including a crane, a phoenix, a fence and the back of a kimono with a ribbon. Chinese porcelain blanks were imported into Europe in some quantity during the eighteenth century, often to avoid duties levied on decorated porcelains. The blanks were then decorated in European studios.
