The underglaze blue decoration on this plate is typically Japanese. There is an aspect of abstraction to the decoration: the landscape elements have been placed at the extremities of the decorative field, leaving a large area of white across the middle of the plate, suggesting distance and perspective. The graduated washes of blue and slightly blurred lines are also typically Japanese, as is the trompe l’oeil approach to the form of the plate, as if it is a piece of paper that has been folded, referencing origami, the Japanese art of paper folding.
