About this work

The subject of this panel is Sir John de Hardreshull and his wife Maud holding a shield with the family arms. The panel probably came from a chapel in Merevale Abbey in Warwickshire, and would have formed part of a larger window. The birds on the shield (martlets), an emblem of the family, are repeated on the couple’s costume. Sir John Hardreshull is shown dressed as a knight.
