About this work

This bronze casket is a relatively early example from a large series of such objects that seem to come from the one workshop. All share the same basic design, although the classical ornament of later examples becomes richer and more intricate. The caskets, probably intended to hold writing implements, have been associated with the Paduan workshop of Severo da Ravenna.
