About this work

This plaquette has four holes at its corners, indicating that it was originally attached to another object, perhaps a casket or a domestic altar. The scene depicted takes place in the Garden of Gethsemane after the Last Supper where Christ prays to God, asking if his coming suffering must truly take place. This scene forms the first of the twelve Stations of the Cross, which chart the suffering and death of Christ.
