Physical description
Yawata evokes an experience of rural life we may encounter while travelling along one of Japan’s historical roadways. In the foreground an elderly traveller walks with a cane followed by his porter carrying a box and packed lunch wrapped in straw and a boy carrying a basket of kindling. On the distant slope a farmer carries a hoe, pipe and tobacco case and a woman carries a baby on her back.
