Sam Francis drew his first lithographs at ULAE (Universal Limited Art Editions) in 1959, while he was sharing a studio in New York with fellow artist Larry Rivers, who introduced him to the print workshop’s founder, Tatyana Grosman. After Francis had drawn on the lithographic stones, they were taken to the workshop on Long Island for proofing, but the prints were not finalised until 1968. Francis was immediately attracted to the surface of the stones but believed the technique was mysterious and best left to the printers: ‘I like to wash the stone, but I don’t know what lithography really is, but perhaps through the stone I may find out who I am and what I am for’.
