About this work

Sam Francis was intrigued by the controlled fluidity and disciplined spontaneity of oriental calligraphy. He made the first of many visits to Japan in 1957, and his subsequent paintings remained closely attuned to the Japanese aesthetic and to a tradition that focuses on the meditative qualities of art and its production.
