About this work

Wally Mandarrk was an integral artist in the development of contemporary bark practice. Born at either Kurlidjkah or Djidkul, Mandarrk was a prolific painter on both rock and bark. Preferring to work in isolation, he rarely visited the community hub at Maningrida. He was believed to have close contact with Mimih spirits in the escarpment Country, and they were a constant theme in his oeuvre. Mimih spirits and human reproduction III is one of three works, all acquired by the NGV in 1990, where Mandarrk explored the philosophies of fertility.
