The former framing of Gardenia carries the John Thallon business label with a 24 Market Lane address which dates the frame anywhere from 1927 through to the 1960’s.
In this instance photographic evidence of the painting in a different frame dates the Thallon frame to after 1942, the year the painting was acquired.
It is possible the Thallon frame was put on the painting by the NGV.
A new frame, based on the 1942 photograph of the original frame, and other frames contemporary with the painting, was constructed in 2002. - Framemaker
