The Roberts panel Harpers Weekly, (c.1888) was acquired in 1958 and the former framing of this work took the form of a small, plain, bevelled moulding with compo decorative corners.
Harpers Weekly was fitted in a reproduction frame in 1985.
The reproduction of 9x5 frames started in 1984 in preparation for the Golden Summers exhibition (1985/6). Initially the reproduction frames were made from red cedar and kauri planks. Research eventually determined the original timber was California redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) – a timber used in Melbourne frames and furniture from the late nineteenth century.
