Frame

When Crowd (1764-5), c.1922 came into the collection in 1967 it was framed with a reverse bolection moulding finish in gold foil and washes of paint.
The proposal to reframe the painting was part of a re-assessment of frames on paintings by the artist in the collection.
Research was undertaken over a period of three years, drawing on collections in state and regional galleries and private collections for the reframing project.
The frame for Crowd is based on the frame on another Grace Cossington Smith painting in the collection, Boys Drawing (NGV A7-1981).
The surface is finished with bronze powder paint.
It was fitted to the painting in 2012.
