Frame

Grace Cossington Smiths’ painting, Road with two horses (c.1933), came into the collection in 1971 housed in a simple, two step bevel moulding frame painted a red ochre colour.
The proposal to reframe the painting was part of a re-assessment of frames on paintings by the artist.
Research was undertaken over a period of three years, drawing on collections in state and regional galleries and private collections.
This reproduction frame is based on the external moulding on Interior with blue painting (NGV 3350-4), similar mouldings on AGNSW Drapery with wattle (1952) and the Parker Mouldings catalogue held at the AGNSW.
The frame was fitted in 2010.
