About this work

Titian’s lofty reputation as an artist was unparalleled in his extraordinarily long lifetime. He was considered a prodigy from a very young age, and reputedly painted until his death at around ninety years of age. Titian’s status remains undimmed to this day, and his works are under continual review and analysis. The authenticity of this painting was accepted by Titian scholars in 1924 (when the painting first came to light), but doubts were raised in 1971, and again in the 1980s. In recent years, Titian’s authorship has once again been accepted.
