Recently discovered on the back of the frame beneath a layer of brown paper is a label for frame maker Charles Chenil & Co. As well as supplying artists’ materials and picture frames the establishment included the Chenil Gallery, an exhibition space for artists including Augustus John, William Nicholson and William Orpen.
The frame features ripple and wave ornament moulded in composition, in a style reminiscent of German 17th century frames. The surface is finished in false gold. A similar style of gilded frame appears on Augustus John’s Robin c.1918-19, (1071-3) in the NGV collection. John also often used black-stained ripple moulded frames in a 17th century style.
