Antonio da Trento left Bologna abruptly in 1530 and subsequently established a partnership with the printmaker Niccolò Vicentino in the Veneto region. There chiaroscuro woodcut production continued, and Vicentino’s workshop became the most prolific in the sixteenth century. The number of chiaroscuro prints made here that were based on Parmigianino’s designs lends credence to Giorgio Vasari’s allegation that da Trento had stolen a cache of drawings from the master when he disappeared in 1530.
