Physical description
The hanging is decorated with dragons with five claws embroidered in gold. Dragon with five claws is a symbol of the Emperor or Son of Heaven. At the bottom of the hanging, a dragon rises above mountain and sea, the isles of the immortals and clouds and waves. Rising from the waves are precious objects or treasures, auspicious symbols of wealth and fortune: coral, ruyi (may your wish come true) sceptre, a pair of circular gold ornaments, a pair of rectangular gold ornaments. Above them and surrounding the dragon are auspicious clouds, a symbol of peace and good fortune, and bats, symbols of happiness of good fortune. Bat is pronounced fu 蝠 in Chinese and is similar to the pronunciation of the word fu福 meaning happiness and good fortune. Other auspicious symbols include the lotus, flower of summer, symbol of purity and nobility and also the sacred flower of Buddhism. The combined symbols of the 'canopy', symbol of a monarch who shelters all living things and 'the royal umbrella' a symbol of the incorruptible official.
