About this work
Acquired for Melbourne in 1868 this is one of the earliest monumental European landscape paintings to enter the NGV’s collection. It proved to be a very influential painting as it was often copied by students at the National Gallery School. It was shown at the Paris Salon in 1866, just two years before it came to Australia.
