Physical description
Scholars gather in six groups in a landscape or garden settings. As we read from the bottom of the hanging scroll, in the lower left corner, a scholar is playing music to his friend who is listening and attended by two boy attendants with tea. In the lower right corner two scholars are engaged in conversation. As we glance upward, we find the scholar Mi Fu wielding his brush writing on a cliff wall. His good friend Wang Qincheng looks at him at work with both hands clasped behind the back. A boy holds the ink-stone in attendance. Further up to the right, a scholar is writing or painting on a piece of paper on a table with three scholars and a boy attendant watching. At the centre of the hanging scroll, another scholar is writing or painting on a piece of paper on a table. He is watched by two scholars with a third scholar looking at the viewer smiling as if it is a living portrait of a well-known scholar. The group is accompanied by one lady holding a wine jug and a girl attendant holding a volume of books. Right at the top of landscape in a bamboo grove and pine trees, a scholar is conversing with a Buddhist monk, both seated with their legs crossed. The landscape is partitioned by rocks and pines and Wutong trees (Chinese parasol tree). The rocks are painted with light green and the trees light blue.
