The group comprises forty-five photographs by Gollings of Vijayanagara, the capital of the Hindu empire in Southern India from the middle of the 14th century until its destruction by Muslim armies in 1565. The photographs were taken between 1982 & 1984, and 33 were published in 'City of Victory: Vijayanagara, The Medieval Hindu Capital of Southern India.' These photographs capture the grandeur, imposing scale and beauty of the City of Victory's monuments, and in emphasising their former glory, draw attention to their fragility and immanent decay. In creating the works, Gollings was concerned to establish ways of seeing the archaeological ruins as an intact, living city, with appropriate spiritual and imperial connotations.
