About this work

The rigid hieratic stance and slab like form of this male figure is reminiscent of sculpture from Teotihuacan and Tula, serving to demonstrates the eclectic nature of early Mexica art. He wears the sandals, beaded necklace, bracelets and square earplugs of a richly adorned warrior noble. He also has a tasselled apron and a banded headdress with horizontal crinkles that may suggest he is wearing a fanlike pleated bark paper ornament, attached to the back of his head.
