About this work
Toilet services originated in seventeenth-century France as part of a popular upper-class custom in which friends and family would be invited to attend the dressing and adornment of a lady during the morning. Matching services included a mirror, boxes, dishes, candlesticks and brushes. The mirror in this service is made of embossed and cast silver fixed over a wooden frame. It would have been draped with a piece of cloth or lace arranged over the back and sides, and used when arranging a hairstyle and applying make-up.
