About this work

Samuel Namunjdja has painted gungara, the spiralling wind associated with several sites belonging to the Kardbam clan. On one level, this painting can be interpreted as a depiction of the kinds of mini cyclones that are common during the wet season in Arnhem Land, where the artist lives. In this work, gungara also relates specifically to a site called Bilwoyini, near Mankalord. Characterised by the superfine rarrk used to create an ethereal abstract geometry of composition, these delicate works in red and yellow ochre on white represent a departure for the artist, who previously worked in a figurative manner.
