About this work

For day, a flat slim bag was worn under the arm or held in the hand. For evening, bags were smaller, glamorous and tactile in sequins and beads. Day or night, the flat bag could be pressed against the wearer’s outfit in order to add a graphic jewel to their ensemble, as in Steichen’s Model wearing evening sandals and a wrap by Drecoll, 1926.

Physical description
Small bag made from black and white glass beads and grey marcasite beads, beaded with a design of stylised flowers, stems and leaves. The bag has a metal clasp opening and a vertical 8.2 cm finger strap, which is looped and threaded through a metal rod attached to the bag’s frame. The bag is a hexagonal shape with rounded edges at the base.
