About this work

Andrea Brustolon was a Venetian sculptor and woodcarver active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. He worked in an ornate late Baroque style and is most famous for his ecclesiastical wood carving. His secular furniture has proved harder to identify, though there are several examples in the Ca’ Rezzonico, made for the Venetian aristocracy. This pair of armchairs was part of a set of ten and was possibly carved for the Palazzo Fini, Venice. During the early nineteenth century the armchairs were probably in Lowther Castle, England. They were purchased by Edward Jones Schollick who emigrated to Australia in 1874.
