About this work

Born on the eastern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Schulim Krimper was an apprentice to the town cabinet-maker before working his way through Europe prior to the outbreak of the First World War. In the 1920s he moved to Berlin, and in 1939 he and his wife fled Nazi-occupied Europe, eventually settling in Melbourne. Favouring Australian timbers, Krimper became known as the city’s premier supplier of custom-made furniture. The simple but refined construction of his furniture and the beauty of its surfaces made his work highly sought after.
