Appliquéd gumleaves, Sturt’s Desert Peas, Strelitzia, boomerangs and love hearts jostle with musical notes across the surface of this multi-layered outfit. Inscribed in appliquéd cord around the hem of the skirt are words referencing the opal, Australia’s distinctive gemstone. Jackson’s appliquéd pieces were inspired by Henri Matisse’s cut-outs which were produced late in the artist’s life in the 1940s and early 1950s.

Appliquéd Wildflowers outfit comprising oval top, long sleeve top, skirt, a pair of separate leggings and batik head scarf. Bright blue cotton ground with all-over appliqué motifs of Australian wildflowers - Anthiriums, Strelizia, Sturts Desert Peas, gumleaves - and love hearts. (a) Chinese-style long-sleeved top with appliquéd motifs. (b) Backless oval panel top with string ties at neck and side waist. (c) Blue cotton dirndl skirt with appliquéd motifs.
