About this work
Appliquéd gumleaves, Sturt’s Desert Peas, Strelitzia, boomerangs and love hearts jostle with musical notes across the surface of this multi-layered outfit. Inscribed in appliquéd cord around the hem of the skirt are words referencing the opal, Australia’s distinctive gemstone. Jackson’s appliquéd pieces were inspired by Henri Matisse’s cut-outs which were produced late in the artist’s life in the 1940s and early 1950s.

Appliquéd Wildflowers outfit comprising oval top, long sleeve top, skirt, a pair of separate leggings and batik head scarf. Bright blue cotton ground with all-over appliqué motifs of Australian wildflowers - Anthiriums, Strelizia, Sturts Desert Peas, gumleaves - and love hearts.
(a) Chinese-style long-sleeved top with appliquéd motifs.
(b) Backless oval panel top with string ties at neck and side waist.
(c) Blue cotton dirndl skirt with appliquéd motifs.
(d) Silk batik head scarf featuring design of Australian wildflowers and love hearts on a turquoise ground.
