This year is a time of celebration for the National Gallery of Victoria as we commemorate our 150th anniversary. This journal also reaches a milestone with 50 years of continuous publication.

From a modest flyer to the much grander volume we see today, the premise of the publication has nonetheless remained consistent, focusing on original research articles that highlight works in the NGV collection. To commemorate our 50th birthday we have implemented a few changes – a more contemporary design; an index to previous issues; and a name change to the Art Journal of the National Gallery of Victoria. We hope you enjoy this special double issue with its rich collection of essays.
