Mon–Fri,10am, 11.30am, 1pm & 2.30pm
Levels 7–12
NGV International

Discover the richness and diversity of African histories and cultures through the lens of fashion.

Developed by the Victoria and Albert Museum, Africa Fashion is the largest exhibition of its kind to be displayed in an Australian art institution.

Introduce students to the ground-breaking designers, collectives and stylists working across Africa today. View and discuss examples of contemporary couture, ready-to-wear and made-to-order clothing that reflects the ingenuity and diversity of the continent’s contemporary fashion industry. Learn about the connections between fashion, activism and identity and discover the way novel approaches and techniques are influenced by traditional crafts.

Students will:

  • Identify key characteristics of fashion and textile designs created by a range of designers from different African countries, cultures and contexts.
  • Discuss the historical, cultural, political influences evident in a diverse range of works in the exhibition.
  • Consider the role of fashion and textile design in defining and cultivating a sense of identity among individuals and broader communities.

Duration: 45 Minutes
Cost: $20.50
Please note, we recommend allowing additional time in your schedule for self-guided viewing of the exhibition either before or after your program.

Please note: The exhibition closes on 6 October 2024.
