Get acquainted with the dynamic life and work of Yayoi Kusama, one of the world’s most recognisable artists living today. Join an NGV educator online to hear about Kusama’s artistic development and the way in which her work connects with key art movements of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including minimalism, pop art, performance and feminist art. This virtual excursion will examine Kusama’s ideas, influences, materials and techniques and include an analysis of selected works in the exhibition. This lively session is perfect for groups unable to attend the Gallery in person, or groups who would like an introduction to the exhibition prior to their visit.

Delivery of this program can be tailored to suit primary or secondary students.

Students will:

  • Analyse and interpret themes, concepts and ideas in Yayoi Kusama’s artworks and discuss how they are expressed using the art elements and principles
  • Discuss how Kusama uses materials, techniques and processes to realise her intentions in her artworks
  • Identify and connect elements of artworks in the exhibition to a wider historical, cultural and social context
