Introducing Yayoi Kusama for Secondary Students

Mon–Fri, 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm
Levels 7–VCE
NGV International

Get acquainted with the dynamic life and work of Yayoi Kusama, one of the world’s most recognisable artists living today. Join an NGV educator to hear about Kusama’s artistic development and the way in which her work connects with key art movements of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including minimalism, pop art, performance and feminist art. This interactive, introductory talk will examine Kusama’s ideas, influences, materials and techniques and include an analysis of selected works on display in the exhibition.

Students will:

  • Analyse and interpret themes, concepts and ideas in Yayoi Kusama’s artworks and discuss how they are expressed using the art elements and principles
  • Discuss how Kusama uses materials, techniques and processes to realise her intentions in her artworks
  • Identify and connect elements of artworks in the exhibition to a wider historical, cultural and social context

Duration: 45 minutes plus self-guided time in the exhibition
Cost: $24.50 per student
